First Line Fridays 1/31/2020

Hey everyone! I’m back with another First Line Fridays, hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author, or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page.
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first!
  • Finally…..reveal the book.
  • It was as if they suspected that what ran through her veins was not blood as in the rest of them, but something hotter and more volatile that might burn any who came too near.

  • This book is…
  • ⬇️
  • ⬇️
  • ⬇️
  • Vika Andreyeva can summon the snow and turn ash into gold. Nikolai Karimov can see through walls and conjure bridges out of thin air. They are enchanters- the only two in Russia- and with the Ottoman Empire and the Kazakhs threatening, the tsar needs a powerful enchanter by his side.

  • So he initiates the Crown’s Game, an ancient duel of magical skill. The victor becomes the Imperial Enchanter and the tsar’s most respected advisor. The defeated is sentenced to death.

  • Raised on tiny Ovchinin Island her whole life, Vika is eager for the chance to show off her talent in the grand capital of Saint Petersburg. But can she kill another enchanter- even when his magic calls to her like nothing else ever has?

  • For Nikolai, an orphan, the Crown’s Game is the chance of a lifetime. But his deadly opponent is a force to be reckoned with- beautiful, whip smart, imaginative- and he can’t stop thinking about her. And when Pasha, Nikolai’s best friend and heir to the throne, also starts to fall for the mysterious enchantress, Nikolai must defeat the girl they both love…or be killed himself.

  • As long-buried secrets emerge, threatening the future of the empire, it becomes dangerously clear…the Crown’s Game is not one to lose.

  • My review for this should be coming on Sunday. Just know I almost DNFed it twice, and the ending made me want to throw the book but in a good way.

    Happy reading 💚

My To Be Continued Readathon TBR

Hey everyone! Today I’m bringing you my first readathon tbr of the year. This is one of three I’m doing in February lol luckily for me two of those are monthly readathons.

The first one I’m going to talk about is the To Be Continued Readathon hosted by a few people over on twitter and discord. This readathon is all about continuing on with series, and as you all know, I love my series. So this is perfect for me. There are 7 levels in total, but you don’t have to try and reach all 7. However, you do have to finish one level before moving onto the next. So let’s get into the prompts and my selected books!

    Level 1: Stand Alone

Top of the TBR Pile: Book you’re most excited to get to – Beautiful Darkness

The Journey: Middle of a series – Order of the Phoenix

The Grand Finale: Read the finale of a series – here is where I chose to use the one wild card we get to replace a prompt with any book we want. I just haven’t chosen that book yet.

    Level 2: Sequel

Read the book: Adaptation/Adapted – Allegiant

This Just In: New Release that is a sequel/continuation – One of Us is Next

    Level 3: Trilogy

Catch-Up: Popular Series – Strange the Dreamer

Hiatus: Uncompleted work as of yet – Wayward Son

    Level 4: Arc

Tangent: Companion Novel, Parallel World, or Prequel – Four

    Welcome Home: Re-read – Untamed

    Level 5: Series

I Like Them, Another: Favorite Author – A World Without Princes

Take as Old as Time: Oldest Publication Date (for this I chose the oldest between three sequels) – Clockwork Prince

    Level 6: Saga

Hipster: Hidden Gem – Another Jekyll, Another Hyde

Procrastination: On TBR the longest, intimidating, or putting off – The Two Towers

Level 7: Master of the TBR

I Bet You Thought You’d Seen the Last of Me: previously completed series – A Court of Wings and Ruin

Second Chance: Sequel is better (where you’ve heard the sequel/series gets better past the first book) – Kiss of Deception

My goal is to at least make it to level 4 or 5. If I do that, I will call this readathon a success 💚

    WWW WEDNESDAY 1/29/2020

Hey everyone! Back again with another WWW Wednesday hosted by Taking on a World Of Words. WWW Wednesday is where you answer the following questions: What are you currently reading? What have you recently finished? What do you plan on reading next? Let’s get into it!

    What are you currently reading?

    I am currently reading:

I’m about halfway through this. I’ve thought about DNFing this because it’s just too slow paced for me and seems more like a slice-of-life historical fiction rather than fantasy. I will push through though because I did get two pieces of information that have me intrigued.

I have to get to this soon because it goes back to the library in a week and I can’t renew it.

So I thought I was finishing this last year, however I hit a slump and stopped. I’m now just passed the first task so hopefully I get it done this week!

    What have you recently finished?

    I recently finished:

What do you plan on reading next?

    My next reads will be:

I started off January with a big book so why not start off February with two and a novella 💚

    WWW WEDNESDAY 1/22/20

Hey everyone! Back again with another WWW Wednesday hosted by Taking on a World Of Words. WWW Wednesday is where you answer the following questions: What are you currently reading? What have you recently finished? What do you plan on reading next? Let’s get into it!

    What are you currently reading?

    What have you recently finished?

DNFed this. Just started not to care.

First reread of the year complete!

What do you plan on reading next?

Hopefully I can get to these two this month plus Sorcery of Thorns just came off hold for me on Libby.

    WWW WEDNESDAY 1/15/20

    What are you currently reading?

Reaching all age groups. An adult reverse harem retelling (for a reading challenge and because I want to at least say I gave it a try), a YA fantasy, and a MG fantasy. Plus I already have my next three lined up once these are finished lol

    Aurora Rising book review

I’m torn with this one everyone. Meet my first (I think) half star rating. I originally rated it 4 stars, but I kept thinking on that rating. I enjoyed the story and characters, however, it didn’t grip me. The ending didn’t really hit its mark with me either. So I finally came to the conclusion to drop my rating to 3.5. And no, I didn’t go thinking it was Illuminae (although they do use some of the voice actors which I loved).

I feel like this had a strong first half. I was invested in the plot and what all the characters were up to. The second half is where it lost me. I felt it dragged, and the part where I was supposed to feel something or be sad I just didn’t. I think it’s because the character it was happening to I didn’t connect with.

I love Kal!! I found myself loving all his chapters. Same with Tyler, Aurora, and Finian. Sarcastic, bad-ass, attitude, and dimples….how can you go wrong?? I know it seems like I didn’t really enjoy this book. However, I really did. Just fell flat at the end. It was a strong 4 until then. That being said, I’m excited for Aurora Burning to come out this year.

One of Us is Lying book review

The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars, One of Us is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide. On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention. Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule. Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess. Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing. Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher. And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app. Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention, Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer that’s still on the loose? Everyone has secrets right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.

I wanted to try this book because I kept hearing about it on booktube. I’m not a big thriller person. Ok I take that back. I’ve never read a thriller. I’m more of a mystery person and that’s probably why this drew my attention. I like being able to try and solve things.

I always say I’m a character driven person, which is true, but in case the plot is what held my attention. Those twists and turns had me thinking one thing at one point and then something completely different at another point. I love how this was written as well. I like being able to see from all the characters point of view and not just a main one sometimes. Especially in a plot like this.

The guys, Cooper and Nate, I enjoyed all throughout the book. The girls, however, switched. I liked Bronwyn at the beginning, but as the story went on she started to do things that just made me go “chill out lady”. Addy I didn’t like at the beginning, but grew to love her by the end. I did enjoy some of the secondary characters as well, especially Maeve.

Now I see why booktubers don’t really give much away about thrillers and mysteries. It really is best to go in blind or only knowing what the synopsis says. This is another series I will be continuing with.

Have you read this? If you have, did you like or dislike it? If you haven’t, is it on your TBR? Let me know down in the comments. As always, happy reading 💚

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl book review

Now we can begin. Let’s talk book first. I bought this book almost a year ago, and kept putting it in TBRs all throughout the year. I even started it and got 230 pages in before putting it down. I don’t know why I couldn’t not get into it. I think it just wasn’t the right time for me to appreciate it because I was reading for readathon and challenge purposes instead of reading for me. So I made it a priority to be one of the first books I read in January. It turned out to be THE first book of 2020 for me, and I gave it 5 stars.

You all know I’m a character driven person and with so many characters I found myself feeling like I was there in the town with them. I was getting mad for some characters like I knew them personally.

I have to mention the audiobook. Oh my word. It was so immersive. Not only do you have the narrator doing the voices, but there would also be sound effects in the background based on what was happening in the scene (mostly the big scenes). The way he did Amma and the Sisters voices had to be my favorite. I honestly can not wait until I pick up book two.

Have you read this book and/or series? Did you enjoy it or not? Have you seen the movie? I plan on watching the movie soon. As always, happy reading 💚

    WWW WEDNESDAY 1/8/20

Hey everyone! Today is another WWW Wednesday hosted by Taking on a World Of Words. Here I will answer the questions: What are you currently reading? What have you recently finished? What do you plan to read next? Let’s get started!

    What are you currently reading?

Halfway through this and still really enjoying it. Should be my next finish either today or tomorrow (hopefully).

Starting this one as well since my hold came in on Libby.

Started my reread of Carry On because I want to get to Wayward Son!

    What have you recently finished?

Finished it yesterday for my first book of 2020! Audiobook was fantastic plus I annotated it because of the characters and settings and things. Really enjoyed it and I already own the entire the series so I can pick up book two shortly.

What do you plan to read next?

Reread of Eragon so I can continue in the series (which I own all of)

Another reread lol however this is because the final book in this series comes out in June so I’m reading a book a month to prepare for it. Plus I haven’t read book 5 yet so getting back into this world would just be amazing.

So it’s clear I have a love of: 1) series and 2) big books lol plus I have a LOT of series to continue and start so 2020 is mostly about that for me. I want to see how many series I can finish this year. Any recommendations on series you loved that you think I would like?? I’m mostly a fantasy girl but I will branch out and try to genres to see if I like them. Let me know which series are your favorite and I may just add them to the list 😉 as always, happy reading 💚
