We Set The Dark on Fire review

At the Medio School for Girls, distinguished young women are trained for one of two roles in their polarized society. Depending on her specialization, a graduate will one day run her husband’s household or raise his children, but both wives are promised a life of comfort and luxury, far from the frequent political uprisings of the lower class.

Daniela Vargas is the school’s top student, but her bright future depends upon no one discovering her darkest secret- that her pedigree is a lie. Her parents sacrificed everything to obtain forged identification papers so Dani could rise above her station. Now that her marriage to an important politico’s son is fast approaching, she must keep the truth hidden or be sent back to the fringes of society, where famine and poverty rule supreme.

On her graduation night, Dani seems to be in the clear, despite the surprises that unfold. But nothing prepares her for all the difficult choices she must make, especially when she is asked to spy for a resistance group desperately fighting to bring equality to Medio. Will Dani give up everything she’s strives for in pursuit of a free Medio-and a chance at a forbidden love?

The first in a sizzling fantasy duopoly from debut author Tehlor Kay Mejia, We Set The Dark on Fire is a boldly feminist look at freedom, family, and fighting the power.

This book was a roller coaster for me. I liked it, than it dragged, then I liked it, etc. I feel like my enjoyment came mostly from the characters since I’m a character driven person. The plot, to be honest, was lost on me. Like I honestly didn’t really care for the plot. The characters, however, made it feel like I was reading a soap opera. I found myself getting mad, happy, anxious, just all the things.

Daniela Garcia, nee Vargas, is my girl. She reminded me of me with how she kept wavering with her trust. I felt for her throughout the entire book.

Carmen Garcia, nee Santos, is the reason I have trust issues. Authors always get me when they have that one character you want to trust but know you shouldn’t. You find yourself trusting them anyway knowing it will turn out bad. Will I ever learn? Nope

Mateo Garcia literally made me want to punch something. He is one of the few characters I’ve read this year that pissed me off so bad you would think he was real.

Sota is precious to me for reasons unknown lol just something about him makes me happy.

I wish I could give a better review of the plot, but like I said it was more of a soap opera to me. Soaps are better known for their characters and that’s how this was for me. It was not a bad book at all in my opinion. I rated it three stars, and that ending has me needing book 2 ASAP.

Have you read this book? Did you enjoy it? Was it a DNF? Is it on your TBR? Let me know! As always, happy reading 💚

First Line Fridays 12/13/19

Hey everyone! I’m back with my third First Line Fridays, hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author, or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page.
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first!
  • Finally…..reveal the book.
  • The problem with stealing other people’s memories is that you start to lose the difference between what’s theirs and what’s yours. Luckily, I know how to exploit that-as long as the teachers don’t find out, anyway.

    This book is….

Arden sells memories. Whether it’s becoming homecoming queen or studying for that all-important test, Arden can hack into a classmate’s memories and upload the experience for them just as if they lived it themselves. Business is great, until the day Arden looks up and sees the boy crossing the schoolyard. The boy her friend assures her she’s known for years. The boy she can’t remember.

Arden soon realizes that her own memories have been hacked, but they haven’t just been stolen and shared….They’ve been removed. And she’s not the only one. Sebastian, the boy whose existence was wiped from her mind, has lost all his memories. Together they must find the hacker to retrieve their missing memories. But how can they stop someone who had the power to make them forget everything they’ve learned?

    Christmas Songs Book Tag

Hello everyone! I was tagged by Danni over at For Books Sake to do this tag so here I go!! Thanks for tagging me!

“All I Want For Christmas Is You”– Favorite bookish couple

Oh boy. Tough one right from the start. I know who my favorite would be, but it would be spoilers for a series. So I’m going with my next favorite of Simon and Baz from Carry On by Rainbow Rowell.

“I’ll Be Home For Christmas” – Name a book where a character is away from home.

Going with The School for Good and Evil series by Soman Chainani.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” – Name your favorite “little” book (children’s book, short story, novella, etc)

I don’t really read little books. I’m a big book kind of lady so I have no answer for this one.

“Santa Clause is Coming to Town” – What book(s) do you hope Santa brings you this year?

There are a lot of books I want, however I would like to start my collection of every James Patterson book written. Even the middle grade ones.

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” – What book turned your nose red (made you cry)

I don’t think I’ve cried a lot in books this year. There is one, however, that sticks out as making me highly emotional, and that is Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz.

“The Most Wonderful Time of Year” – Your favorite book/kind of book to read during the holidays.

I read fantasy year round. The type of fantasy may change, but it’s always a fantasy book.

“We Three Kings” – your favorite trilogy

I have three because of course I do lol Splintered series by A. G. Howard, Divergent trilogy by Veronica Roth, and the Another trilogy by Daniel and Dina Nayeri.

“Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow” – a character you would like to be snowed in with

Part of me wants to say Draco Malfoy and the other part wants to say Bill Weasley. So I’m going with both 😎

“Last Christmas” – a book that seriously let you down

Switched by Amanda Hocking. I think this is honestly my one big let down of the year

“White Christmas” – an upcoming release you’re dreaming about

One True King by Soman Chainani. It’s the final book of the School for Good and Evil series. Im excited but sad to see it end. Definitely do a reread of the whole series leading up to the release.

    I tag:

    Happy holidays everyone!!

    WWW WEDNESDAY 12/11/19

Hello there!! It’s been awhile since I’ve posted. Life had become extremely stressful with work and health a little bit, so I needed a break to recharge. Plus I also such a slump in reading during that time so all bad. However I am now back! Reading is still kind of slow, but if I continue to break it into chunks I should be back reading fully in no time 😊

Today’s post is another installment of WWW Wednesday hosted by Taking on a World Of Words. It ask the questions: What are you currently reading? What have you recently finished? What do you plan on reading next? Let’s get into it!

    What are you currently reading?

If I stick to my plan, these should be done either today or tomorrow with a review up for We Set The Dark on Fire on either Friday or Saturday.

    What have you recently finished?

My Splintered series reread is still going on. I finished Unhinged and now have two books left. I’m hoping I can get to them before the year is over. I also finished WWE Vol 1 just because I was feeling a graphic novel at that time. I haven’t finished a book since November 16.

What do you plan to read next?
